The Portuguese Bar Association App is a free mobile application for Android and iOS, built by Caixa Mágica Software in collaboration with the Portuguese Bar Association (BA) and BearingPoint. It gives lawyers and citizens direct access to Bar Association services from their phone, replacing a web portal that worked but could not deliver the experience a mobile-first audience needed.
The app is available for free on both the Google Play Store and Apple App Store.
Portuguese Bar Association App: The Challenge
The Bar Association had a web portal. It was responsive, meaning it adapted to mobile screens, but it was not a mobile app. That distinction matters more than it might seem.
A responsive website and a native mobile app are different tools. A website adapted for mobile lacks the device integrations, the push notifications, the offline capability, and the native performance that users expect from an app. For lawyers who spend a significant part of their working day in courts, police facilities, and prisons, the difference between a browser tab and a dedicated app is the difference between a tool they reach for and one they ignore.
What the BA needed was something built for mobile from the start. Not a port of the existing portal, but an application designed around how lawyers actually work: on the move, under time pressure, with specific professional tasks that do not map neatly onto a general-purpose website.
Two audiences had to be served. Lawyers needed professional tools: deadline calculators, secure messaging, access to their professional licence, and support for duty work under the Access to Justice system. Citizens needed a different set of features: news, events, a way to find lawyers by location, and a direct channel to request legal advice. Both had to be served well within the same application.

A single app for two distinct audiences
Caixa Mágica built the Portuguese Bar Association App around a clear separation between what lawyers need and what citizens need, without creating two separate products. Both groups can access news, events, and the lawyer and institution search tool with geo-referencing. Beyond that shared layer, the experience diverges based on the user’s role.
Lawyers log in and access a set of professional tools not visible to citizens. Citizens access a different set of features, including the “Consult a Lawyer” channel, which is not relevant to a professional user. The architecture keeps the app coherent while serving genuinely different purposes for each group.

Lawyers using the Portuguese Bar Association App have access to the full range of tasks a legal professional might need to handle on a mobile device.
Among the most used features is the deadline calculator. Legal deadlines are non-negotiable. Missing one has consequences that cannot be undone, so having a reliable calculator built into the app, calibrated to Portuguese legal timelines, removes the risk of manual calculation errors.
Access to the professional licence via QR code means lawyers can confirm their credentials digitally without carrying a physical card. This is particularly useful in formal settings like court appearances, where identity verification is a routine part of the process.
The secure messaging system is exclusive to lawyers. It supports direct messages between individuals and group conversations, with the ability to share images and files. Messages stay within the app’s encrypted environment rather than passing through general-purpose messaging services. Lawyers also have access to webmail and quota payment through the app, keeping administrative tasks in one place.
SADT: support for duty lawyers
One of the more specialised features of the Portuguese Bar Association App is the SADT module, designed for lawyers working within the Access to Justice and Courts System. Duty lawyers handle cases assigned by the court, often at short notice and across multiple locations. Keeping track of duty days, case details, and location requirements is an administrative burden on top of the legal work itself.
The SADT module addresses this directly. It identifies duty days and the cases a lawyer is handling, generates alerts to prompt the recording of activities, and uses geolocation to detect when a lawyer is at a court, a police facility, or a prison. At that point, the app prompts the lawyer to log relevant information about the visit. When an urgent duty request comes in, the lawyer can confirm availability directly through the app without needing to make a phone call or send an email.
In practice, this means less administrative overhead for lawyers doing duty work, a cleaner record of activities for reporting purposes, and faster response times when urgent assignments arise.

Citizens use the Portuguese Bar Association App primarily to find legal help and stay informed. The geo-referenced lawyer search lets users find lawyers and legal institutions near their location, filtering by speciality and proximity. For someone who needs legal representation and does not know where to start, this is considerably more useful than a directory website.
The “Consult a Lawyer” feature goes further. It establishes a direct digital communication channel between a citizen and a lawyer, available both through the app and through a dedicated web portal. Citizens can initiate contact without knowing a specific lawyer’s contact details. The feature brings access to legal advice closer to people who might otherwise not know how to find it.

Back office for Bar Association staff
Behind the citizen and lawyer interfaces sits a back office used by Bar Association staff to manage content and communications. Staff can publish news, manage events, and send notifications to app users. The notification module supports targeted messaging: alerts can be sent to all users or to specific segments based on data held in the Bar Association’s database.
In practice, this means the Bar Association can communicate directly with duty lawyers about schedule changes, send reminders to members about upcoming deadlines or events, and reach citizens with relevant legal news. Direct push notifications are more reliable than email for time-sensitive messages, and the back office gives staff full control over who receives what.
Technical architecture
The Portuguese Bar Association App was built using React Native for the mobile application, which allows a single codebase to run on both Android and iOS without sacrificing native performance. Web portal components use React Web. On the back end, the system runs on .NET with a MySQL database.
This stack gave the development team the flexibility to build a feature-rich application while maintaining a consistent experience across platforms. React Native in particular was the right choice for an app that needed to work well on a wide range of devices, from recent flagships to older handsets still in active use.

Lawyers with the tools they need in the field
Before the Portuguese Bar Association App, a lawyer handling duty work had to track their schedule, log their activities, and manage urgent requests through a combination of phone calls, emails, and manual records. The app consolidates all of that into a single tool that works on the device already in their pocket.
The secure messaging system replaces ad hoc communication through general-purpose apps with an environment that respects the confidentiality requirements of legal practice. Deadline calculations that were previously done by hand or with external tools now happen within the same platform lawyers use for everything else.
As a result, lawyers spend less time on administration and more time on legal work. That is the practical outcome of giving a professional group tools designed specifically for their context.
Citizens with easier access to legal services
Access to legal advice is not evenly distributed. People who know lawyers personally, or who know how the legal system works, navigate it more easily than those who do not. The geo-referenced search and the “Consult a Lawyer” feature reduce that gap in a concrete way.
A citizen who needs legal help can open the app, search for a lawyer with the relevant speciality near their location, and make direct contact through a built-in channel. No directory to decipher, no cold calls to a switchboard. The path from needing legal help to reaching a qualified lawyer is shorter and more accessible than it was before.
A closer relationship between the BA and its members
The Bar Association’s ability to communicate with its members improved significantly after the app launched. Push notifications reach lawyers directly, with higher reliability than email. Targeted notifications mean the BA can send relevant information to specific groups rather than broadcasting everything to everyone.
For an institution with thousands of members across Portugal, that level of direct communication was not previously possible without significant manual effort. The app gives the Bar Association a channel it controls, configured to its specific communication needs.
