Embarking on a Journey of Innovation: Our Story Begins in 2000

The inspiration for the creation of Linux Caixa Mágica arose from the market's need for a non-proprietary operating system that, beyond merely supporting the Portuguese language, was designed with the entire universe associated with this language in mind.

Government programs

e-Escolas and e-Escolinhas

The Linux CM Magalhães was developed based on Linux Caixa Mágica, especially to be integrated into Magalhães laptops designed for school-age children. This initiative provided users with early exposure to open technologies.

The operating system was distributed for free on DVD by JP Sá Couto to primary schools for installation on the laptops. Additionally, it was factory-installed on the laptops in dual-boot configuration with Microsoft Windows.

Lite Linux Caixa Mágica

In 2020, a Lite version of our original distribution was released, coinciding with the launch of contemporary benchmark distributions.

Its creation emerged as a response to the pandemic brought about by the COVID-19 virus, particularly addressing the need for remote work and study. During this time, limitations in access to hardware platforms were evident among significant segments of society in Portugal and around the world, hindering the ability to perform a minimum of activities from home.

This new version is compatible with various PC hardware platforms, also incorporating dozens of open-source applications that cover all major needs of the average user. It was developed to be used on refurbished equipment, aiming to reduce electronic waste and facilitate access to education and training.
